The Gran Kursaal began its history on 29 July 1922. Gambling was prohibited in 1924, at the height of San Sebastián’s golden age. The prohibition was raised on 10 June 1978, and the first Spanish casino of the new age, the New Gran Casino del Kursaal in San Sebastián, opened its doors; in 2003, the company celebrated its 25 anniversary. Today the Casino is located right in the heart of the city, on the Boulevard Donostiarra, in a busy pedestrian area near the Town Hall (an imposing building which housed Spain’s first casino in 1887), the Yacht Club, marina, the romantic quarter and the historic part of town, a genuine gathering place for locals and for visitors to the city.
